Advancing Lean Six Sigma through Systems Thinking
Company:Seagate Technology
Category:Breakout
Date / Time:May 21, 2008
Delivered At:9th Annual Leadership Conference
Description:Seagate Technology has been at the forefront of exploring how to bring the tools and framework of Systems Thinking into the Business Excellence community of practice. Systems Thinking provides an additional problem solving framework that generates insight beyond the traditional DMAIC and DFSS models. Developed at M.I.T., Systems Thinking focuses on the circular nature of the systems we work in, raises awareness of the role structure plays in governing performance and outcomes, recognizes that there are powerful laws of systems operating in all organizations that we do not fully understand and helps us realize that there are consequences to our actions that we may be oblivious to.

In this session we will further explore why Seagate (and other organizations) have pursued bringing Systems Thinking into their Six Sigma projects, how Seagate has approached integrating Systems Thinking into Six Sigma work and what has Seagate learned about bringing the Systems tools into their projects. We will also further build on the Systems Thinking principles and tools introduced in the workshop session on Systems Thinking on Tuesday afternoon. The intent of this Round Table is to enable participants to acquire a fuller understanding of the value that Systems Thinking offers in dealing with persistent, complex, and frequently cross-functional organizational problems.

The session will be highly interactive. It will be led by Dan Tegel, Seagate Technology and Michael Goodman, Applied Systems Thinking.
