Project Management Meets Lean Six Sigma
Category:Workshop
Date / Time:December 1, 2011
At:11th Annual Leadership Conference
Abstract:Historically LSS Practitioners, namely Black Belts and Master Black Belts have been charged to execute small, medium, and large scale improvement projects. Unfortunately their LSS education is rarely armed with structured comprehensive project management (PM) techniques. Consequently their knowledge of traditional PM tools is limited. Recent ISSSP LSS Profiler results confirm this finding. Of the ten most important competencies required of LSS Practitioners, PM ranked 5th in importance. Unfortunately, relative to other competencies, Profiler applicants scored in the bottom half on their levels of PM knowledge and second from the bottom in their levels of PM training. Generally speaking, we can deduce that a need for improving the structured PM capabilities of LSS practitioners exists.

A Lean Six Sigma Project satisfies the definition of a project in accordance with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) of the Project Management Institute (PMI®): "A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product." Actually a Lean Six Sigma Project is two projects in one. The first is the DMA portion of DMAIC Project that evaluates the existing process and defines a path toward improvement. The second project is the IC portion of a DMAIC Project that implements the solution previously defined.

Project management principles are applicable to both the DMA and the IC projects. This workshop will demonstrate how to apply the PMBOK® in a fit-for-use manner for Lean Six Sigma projects. During the course of the workshop, audience participation will be actively sought to better understand the fit-for-use application of PMBOK® principles across a broad range of common functions, processes, and industries.
